Captain John Mayfield was a member of the first company,, SC troops sent to aid the northern colonies and was with his company at Braddock's defeat. The remnant of the militia was organized into fighting units and used to help the settlers into a position where they could be protected under the command of Captain John Stanwix. The forces thus organized fixed the defense where Rome, N.Y. now stands on the bank of the Mohawk which flows from the north southward and empties into the Hudson about Troy, N.Y. and the Wilson creek which flows from the south to northeast into Lake Oneida and these waters empty into Lake Erie. There in the center of Rome, Fort Stanwix was built. For Valiant conduct, along with Samuel McJUNKIN, and by running of the blockade of General Montcalm, aid was brought and the siege was raised. John Mayfield and Samuel McJUNKIN were promoted to be Captains and each maintained his position until 1776 when each resigned. Captain John Mayfield and his wife, Mary Stanwix, settled on the land joining Thomas Brandon on Brown's creek. They bought two tracts from the Brandons 9 Dec. 1775.
