About John High McMillan
John McMillan came from the Isle of Islay, where he was born, which lies to the west of the Mull of Kintyre between Ulster and Scotland. A very remote isolated place. Sometime in the early 19th century the family moved to Kilmun, Argyll, which is on the "Holy Loch" just outside the firth of Clyde. John was a blacksmith by trade and worked hard to provide for and educate his large family. Duncan and Donald were appreticed to him. There is a posibility that John & Mary were married in Strachur or Renfrewshire (a lead for research).
In the 1851 Census his occupation is listed as "Proprietor Of Houses", so he must have bought some property as a retirement investment. He is still listed as living at Cardy House together with Mary, and 2 daughters Mary & Margaret.
One of his son's, Gilbert became the Minister of Loth, Sutherland. John Wiliiam (another son) married a young English girl and sailed away on a ship bound for the British colony of Australia, but due to sea sickness they de-shipped in Durban, Natal. He became something of a legend in that part of the world.
