About John George Melvill
The original John Melvill in SA (son of Thomas, the mariner) became a missionary with the London Missionary Society (LMS) in his forties and 'co-founded' the Hankey Khoi mission agricultural settlement with Dr John Philip. Since then there have always been Melvilles living and farming in the Gamtoos River valley (Hankey, Patensie, and Humansdorp nearby). Samuel, of course, was born on one of the other Khoi missions that the LMS founded, namely Philippolis. He followed in his father John's early career footsteps and became a surveyor.
