Notes

In the House of Burgess (Virginia) journal, p. 128 for the years 1761-65, mention is made of the right of John Metcalfe Jr. to vote on a petition as follows: John Metcalf holds 150 acres of land which was left by William Spiller to John Metcalfe, his heirs and assigns, bearing the date of Nov. 27, 1738. Said John the father, his wife Diana and the said John the son. That the said John Metcalfe the elder died sometime in the year 1751 intestate and the said John Metcalfe Jr. hath ever since resided on the land, together with his mother, who always paid quit rent for the same. His right to vote was upheld. On p. 118 of the William and Mary Quarterly, Bk. 31 for the year 1924 a note says 'Diana Medcalf was living in 1761 and is listed under buyers of cattle and living in 1765.'
