Betting is now open as to whether she was a casual indiscretion of Duncan's, or a collateral relative, or no relation at all (there were lots of Campbells, and both "Anne" and "Agnes" - still frequently used interchangeably at that time - were popular girls' names),

Note: [wife is incorrect]

John Miller must have been very brave to marry the daughter of such a powerful, ambitious, and intimidating man as Black Duncan of the Cowl. He may have been one of Duncan's employees under the protection of Clan Campbell. Originally, these Millers may have been members of an associate family of Clan MacFarlane who lived at the northern end of nearby Loch Lomond.

But whatever his position, he was not just another John Miller. His grandfather was Black Iye Mackay (Scottish pronunciation rhymes with 'rely'), chief of the powerful Clan Mackay of far northern Scotland. Through his mother, John was also a descendant of the Sinclair Earls of Orkney, lords of the misty isles beyond Scotland, the same line of Sinclair Lords of Roslin who built Rosslyn Castle and mysterious Rosslyn Chapel.

John was also a descendant of the powerful Earls of Douglas who held the Scottish border against English invasions. At least one Stewart king was in his ancestry - Robert II.
