Surnames: MILLER, BOWIER, TIDBALL

My grandfather, Arthur Miller, was born in Fillmore, Putnam Co., in 1863. His

sister and several Indiana cousins joined the DAR on the record of their

gr-grandfather, PVT.John MILLER,8th PA. regiment. This John Miller was born in

1753 (Bible record) to Oliver and Mary (TIDBALL) Miller in Cecil Co., Maryland

near the Pennsylvania border. By 1770 the Miller's established themselves in

Washington Co., PA (now Allegheny Co.) Oliver Miller's homestead is now an

historical site near Pittsburgh in South Park, Pa. In 1794 John with brothers

William and Thomas became involved in the Wiskey Insurrection which started

because of an unfair tax on grain farmers. When the rebellion was over Thomas

spent some time in jail and probably John also. Because the insurrection started

on the farm of William Miller (he scared a tax collector off his property by

shooting over his head)William was to go on trial in Philadelphia for treason.

Before this could take place William, John and Thomas sold their farms and moved

their families to Fleming Co., Kentucky. Brother Thomas stayed in Kentucky but

in 1834 William and John moved to Indiana. John intended to settle in Putnam Co.

where some of his children were but ended up in Rushville where sons, Alexander

and Josiah had purchased land. John purchased 80 acres which is still owned by

MILLER's and is registered as a HOOSIER HOMESTEAD.
