Notes for John Campbell Morrow:
Born on his father's farm on Barren Run, South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania,
March 6, 1825. He went to subscription and common schools in that locality. There is no record of his school
days but several articles he contributed to newspapers in later life indicate that he had a very good education.
About 1847 he settled on the Shepherd farm at Reagantown and engaged in the meat business. In 1870 he moved
to Scottdale and in 1882 went to Mount Pleasant and there formed a partnership with James Warden in a meat
market and, together, they continued in business until 1900. They dealt in cattle and hogs wholesale and had a
retail market. Having been in the meat business for thirty years, Mr. Morrow retired from active business and
moved back to Scottdale. He had been an active Democrat in politics and had held several township and county
offices. His wife Elizabeth Shepherd, was born on the Shepherd homestead near Reagantown. She, also, was well
educated for that time. She went to the subscription school at Smith's Schoolhouse. It was an eight cornered
building on the Foster farm at Reagantown. The Morrows were members of the Methodist-Episcopal church at
Wesley Chapel for forty-five years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Morrow were of keen mind and were always interested in
local and national affairs. They were cheerful and loved humor and laughter. Mrs. Morrow could play the organ
and sing and even after eighty years of age could read and do fancy needle work without glasses. She made many
beautiful piece work quilts. Both liked company, so birthdays, anniversaries and holidays were occasions for
celebration by parties or dinners. They had the love and respect of all their children and a wide circle of friends.
With his son, Joseph Caldwell, of Pittsburgh, John C. Morrow visited E. Walton Morrow of Smithton, PA. on
October 20, 1903. On that morning, John remarked on an unusually pleasing circumstance. He said, "Here
sitting around this table are four generations; my son, (Joseph) Caldwell Morrow, my grandson, Walton Morrow
and my great granddaughter, Margaret Morrow. It doesn't often occur that four generations sit together at the
same table."
