THE FATHER OF OUR WILLIAM NASH. JOHN'S WILL DATED OCT 26 1726 AND PROVED APRIL 17 1727. HE SETTLED IN UPPER DUBLIN TWP. PA. Note: Upper Dublin is in Montgomery County, not Bucks. Dublin is in Bucks County. Census records show Nash's in both Counties. SIRED 8 CHILDREN, WILLIAM BEING ONE OF THEM.

Welk/Nash Doc. 018 indicates that John Colley's daughter Ann married John Nash from Upper Dublin, Pa. and that he left her half of his estate. John Colley refers to his daughter as Ann Nash. Blacksmith & farmer. (108 acres) Will written Oct 26 1726, proved APR 14 1727. Married to Ann Colley circa 1690. John was not a Quaker and Ann probably changed from Quaker upon her marriage. Stanley Nash writes of John Nash: "The earliest notice I have of him is on the 1673 Tax List for Philadelphia a. See the article THE FIRST TAX LIST FOR PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, (INTRODUCTORY NOTE BY WILLIAM BROOKE RAWLE pp 82-84. Tax Lists, pp 85-105) in Volume 8 (1884) No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. This province wide tax was made law 15 MAY 1693 AND SET THE TAX AT ONE PENNY FOR EACH POUND ASSESSMENT.

WM. PENN AT THAT TIME WAS OUT OF FAVOR WITH the new rulers of Britain, William and Mary, who had deposed her father, James II, with whom Penn had been on good terms. Penn was in virtual hiding for a while. He was not in control of Pennsylvania for two years from 1692-1694. I understand that the entire tax list for the three original counties of Pennsylvania and for Delaware has recently been published. "The First Tax List for the Province of Pennsylvania and the Three Lower Counties. (Adams Apple Press 1994) Pages 85-94 must be the list for Philadelphia City, though it is not so labeled. Then follow pp 95-10 5 the lists for other localities within the county, all labeled as such- Northern Liberties, Germantown, etc. On page 88 one finds John Colley, L72 tax 6s.and John Nash L60 tax 5s. There are only three names between them, so they must have been close neighbors, and they are the only Colley and Nash on the entire list. I believe they were the maternal grandfather and father, respectively, of Wm. Nash (Sr.) (1696-1760) from whom both you and I are descended. (from Stanley Nash)
