In will drawn in 1843 John changed the SCHMIDT name to SMITH.
The following was contributed by Hanna McClain Reuber, granddaughter of William Riley and Martha Elizabeth Smith:
John Nicholas Smith of German lineage was born in Georgia December 25, 1816. Came to Lincoln County, Tennessee, when a young man. He married Nancy Bains, who was born 1806 and came to Lincoln County, Tenn. from North Carolina in 1824. John and Nancy lived on a farm in Lincoln County and to them three children were born: Margaret A. Smith, William Riley Smith, and Dillana Smith. William Riley Smith married Martha Elizabeth Koonce 1859. John Nicholas Smith died Augustt 19, 1859 of typhoid fever and hemomorrhage of the bowels while postmaster at Cordova, Tennessee.
