John Nugent was a soldier in the Regiment on Foot - Regimental Number 283...... Queens Own 50th in 1834. He appears to have left the regiment in 1835 and taken a role in the police force. He sent for his wife, Catherine Nugent (nee Craig) at this time and she came to NSW on HM Moffat in 1836. The voyage was generally uneventful until the ship was entering Sydney harbour. The ship could not acquire a pilot and in trying to pass through the heads suffered significant damage to its mast and main salils. Anchors wre cut free and for a time the ship appear to be headed for the rocks. But various vessels came to its aid and it made port in Sydney.
It recorded (on her death certificate) that Sarah Mary was born during the voyage just off Plymouth...... This is unconfirmed.
John Nugent became an Inspector of Police (1835-65) in Sydney. He died at Smedmore Building off Cumerland Street, The Rocks,Sydney in 1875 - inforant John Nugent (son), Mill Street, off Sussex Street, Sydney. Catherine predeceased him in Sydney (at Kent Street) on 31 May 1868 - Ellen Rider (daughter), Kent Street, Sydney informant.
