About John S. Nye
Obituary: "J. S. NYE, who died at his farm home near this city last Sunday, April 20, was born in Ohio , Dec 19, 1823. He removed to Iowa in 1837 and there married Mary E. Childers, who survives him. They crossed the plains by ox teams in 1850, coming down the Columbia in canoes. In 1851 they settled on their donation claim near Jefferson , where they resided until his death. He was the father of nine children, seven of whom are living, two daughters having preceded the father on the journey to the great beyond. J. S. NYE was a good man, enjoying the esteem of all. His hospitable home was ever open to all and his ear never closed to the cry of the needy. Wonderful are the changes he witnessed during his long and useful life, and, full of years and honor, he willingly laid down life's burden and entered upon his well earned rest. The funeral obsequies Tuesday were attended by a large number of people, who wished to pay a last tribute to one of Oregon 's brave old pioneers." The Jefferson Review, April 26, 1902 3:4.
