Claimed descent from the "O'Neale" (actually Neale) family of Maryland. (At some point the descendants added an O' and created a myth of noble/royal Irish ancestry, the better to give themselves airs).
He had a plantation in Port Tobacco, Maryland and was reported to have been murdered by one of his slaves. His widow was Eliza Henrietta Hamilton. They had four daughters. He was the father of the Confederate spy Rose O'Neal Greenhow.
