About John Overall
John was the youngest son of JOHN OVERALL and Mary ELLIOTT of Prince William, Co. VA. John was very young (about 7 years old) when his father died (in 1742/43) and he was left in the guardianship of his father's brother, Nathaniel. He was to be put to school "till 14" and then to be "cept to work till 18" and then be of an age to act for himself. John was married to Frances Whitledge and they and their family were on the Tax List in Prince William until they began selling their property in 1763. By 1779 they signed a release of their land to William Grant of King George, VA and in 1780 are listed in what is now Bullitt Co., KY. He and his family became pioneer settlers of Kentucky.
Born in Virginia, fought in the Revolutionary War and received a land grant in Nelson County as a reward. He built the cabin on that land about 1784. The structure was moved to the Old Bardstown Village for historical display around the 1980s.
