About John Thomas Passey

John Thomas Passey was born January 24, 1860 in Farmington, Cavis County, Utah. He is the son of Thomas and Drusilla Theobald. His father came in the first handcart company to Utah.

John T. Passey was married to Annie Neat in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City on September 29th, 1881 by Daniel H. Wells. After their marriage they lived in Dingle, Idaho until after their first baby was born and then Annie and John made their home in Lanark, Idaho in the spring of 1883. They were the first, as a family to settle in Lanark. They became the parents of twelve children, seven boys and five girls.

The eldest son, John Thomas Jr. died when almost one year old. Wilford died when he was thirteen years old after being thrown from a horse. On April 13, 1901 while attending church services where a daughter was receiving a name and a blessing, little three year old Woodruff was drowned as he tried to cross Hammond Creek which ran past their home.

John Thomas owned and operated a large farm in lanark. He raised large quantities of hay and grain on irrigated land. A portion of the land was dry farmed. Both he and Annieworked very hard to make the farm pay financially. Squirrels and drought plagued them year after year. Indians came frequently t otheir home but a friendly relationship was maintained.

In the fall of 1906 Annie and John purchased a home in Paris where they lived during the winter months and moved to the farm in the summer.

Annie was installed as president of the Young Ladies Mutual Association on December 19, 1893. She was also secretary of the Paris Relief Society in the Paris Second Ward. She sang in the Second Ward chior and also as a young girl she sang in the Ripple Church in England.

In February of 1920 Annie took seriously ill with cancer and died in the Ashley Hospital at Montpelier, Idaho March 3, 1920

On December 7, 1927, John Thomas married Mary Jane Watkins Hymes in the Logan Temple.

John Thomas passed away June 20, 1936. Both Annie and John are buried in the Lanark cemetary overlooking the town they proudly called home. Hundreds of their posterity live on and have promoted and influenced the progress of Bear Lake Valley.
