John Phelps was born in 1683 in Goochland, Goochland County, Virginia or in Maryland, United States. He was the son of William Phelps (1657-1748) and Anne Gorsuch (1656-1711).
John married Martha Margaret Talbot (1684-1747) in Goochland, Virginia in 1705. John was 22 years old and Martha was 21. Margaret was NOT the daughter of William Talbot (1654-1698) and Katherine Ogg Talbot.
John and Martha Margaret Talbot Phelps had the following 6 known children: John (Col. John), Thomas, Samuel, William, Elizabeth and Nancy.
