Obituary
MR. J. L. PINCUS DIES WHILE PLAYING BOWLS
Cape Town - A world tournament bowler, Mr. John Louis Pincus, collapsed and died while taking part in
a mid-week competition game at the Shell Bowling Club this week.
Mr Pincus, who was 60, was born in Winburg, Orange Free State, and came to Cape Town as a law
student in 1920. He was admitted to the sidebar in 1925 and practised in Wynburg, up to the time of his
death.
Mr Pincus represented South Africa in the world bowls tournament in Seattle, U.S.A., in 1962, and was
in the rink which came second. He was elected to the executive of the W.P. Bowling Association during
1963.
Mr C.E. Cuff, Chief Magistrate at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court, paid tribute to Mr Pincus at a
gathering of magistrates court officials and legal practitioners.
SCOUTMASTER
Mr Pincus was one of the first Jewish Scoutmasters in Cape Town, and took a very keen interest in all
Jewish Activities. He was on the executive of the Young Israel Society - an organisation of which his
late brother, Dr J. V. Pincus, was one of the founders.
Mr Pincus was also a committee member of the Muizenberg Hebrew Congregation. Representatives
from most of the bowling clubs in the Peninsula, and from the legal profession were present at the funeral
which took place at the Jewish Cemetery in Muizenberg.
Mr Pincus is survived by his sister, Mrs Babs Genn, of Durban, and his brother, Mr Sia Pincus, of
Johannesburg.
