About John Samuel Reid
Lived in Wales. Died young. [Green Book] Accidentally killed app. 1906 in Bristol. [Ave document]. Rose thinks he may have fallen off a gangplank. She says that she remembers a story about two brothers who died in marine related accidents. This story might refer to George Winder Reid and John Samuel Reid [Rose, 6-30-13].
Primary source (the ship's log) retrieved at the National Archives at Kew confirm that J.S. Reid died from injuries received when he fell into the lower hold of the ship "Scottish Moors." (See Sources tab)
The hospital ship referred to in the death register is the Hamadryad Hospital Ship, Cardiff. The Hamadryad served the seamen of Cardiff from the 1860s until 1905. The vessel, a man-of-war with 46 guns, had been built at Pembroke Dock in 1823 but was never put into service and was towed to Cardiff in 1866 to be converted as a floating hospital, with room for 50 in-patients.
