About John Ross
Accompanied his friend, John Wilkie, on Wilkie's vessel in 1772 to operate a shipping business out of Gloucester County, VA; assumed to have participated with Wilkie in the American Revolution, as Wilkie is documented as having served as a pilot for Lord Dunmore's (the Royal Governor of Virginia) British fleet and was allegedly subsequently wounded, captured and held as a prisoner for the duration of the war. They were both deported as Loyalists to Nova Scotia, arriving 7/15/1783. He and Wilkie subscribed for crown land grants as Loyalists in Shelburne County, but allegedly tired of waiting for the government to deliver and instead bought most of the land in Bear Hills, later known as north Middle LaHave, Lunenburg County, NS (source: Donald Winsor Shankle, a descendant of John Wilkie).
