About John Thomas Satterthwaite

John Thomas Satterthwaite is listed on the 1834 family tree as a John Satterthwaite, born in 1830.

When examining the records of John Satterthwaites in the area born around that time, it becomes clear that this particular John Satterthwaite is in fact John Thomas Satterthwaite, named after his father. This is the name on his 1830 baptism record, where he is listed as the son of a Thomas and a Margaret.

John Thomas Satterthwaite left the Hawkshead area for some time around the time of his marriage to his wife, Mary Ann. From the 1881 census record, we can see a John Thomas Satterthwaite in the Hawkshead area (specifically Skelwith) once more, with five sons who were all born in Brathay, where he presumably moved at some point between 1851 and 1881.

John Thomas was a Gamekeeper, and his sons were in similarly laborious professions, with his sons Thomas, John and Frank being listed as Gardeners in the 1881 and 1901 censuses respectively. They all appear to have been domestic servants - this is evident when we see Frank listed as first a Groom in 1891, then a Gardener in 1901.

Around 1882, John had at least one granddaughter, Margaret, who is listed as either living with or visiting him in the 1891 census.

It seems likely to the author, given his absence from the 1911 census and the presence of a grave in Brathay, that this John Thomas Satterthwaite died in 1905 and is buried in Brathay with his wife Mary Ann. A son, Michael, is listed on the grave, who died in 1887 (and therefore his absence from the 1891 census is explained).
