1778 Will of John Scarborough -- Date: January 10, 1778, Southampton, Virginia

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Scarborough, of this County of Southampton, being in perfect health and seemed perfect and disposing mind and memory. Gathering to mind the uncertainty of this life and knowing that it is appointed for the flesh to die, do I think proper to make and ordain this my last will and testament, hereby disallowing and revoking all former will or wills by me therefore made.

  • Imprimis: I give and bequeath unto my son, Benjamin Scarborough two shilling and six pence.
  • Item: I give to the heirs of Robert Scarborough two shillings and six pence.
  • Item: I give to Ann Hines, wife of John Hines, two shillings and six pence.
  • Item: I give to Lydia Stewart, wife of Benjamin Stewart, two shillings and six pence.
  • Item: My will and desire that my loving wife, Mary Scarborough, continue on the plantation I now live on. The plantation where I now live is quite prosperous during her natural life.
  • Item: I give to Brittain Scarborough - one cow -- one calf.
  • Item: I give unto my loving wife, Mary Scarborough, the use and profits of all my personal estate and labor of my negro girl, Nancy, for and during her natural life.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to my son, John Scarborough, after his mother's decease, the plantation and where I now live to him and his heirs and progeny forever.
  • Item: My will and desire is that all the sum assets of my estate, real and personal, after the death of my wife, may be equally divided between my five youngest children (viz): John, Sukey, Patty, Betsey and Sarah Scarborough and to their heirs and progeny.
  • Item: I do hereby ordain and appoint my dear living wife, Mary Scarborough, to be my whole and sole executor to this, my last will and testament, hereby revoking and disallowing all other will or wills by heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
