John Schwab

John was born to John Schwab; mother's name unknown.

John sailed on the ship Hemisphere from Le Havre, France and arrived in New York City May 19, 1857. He was listed as "Johann Schwab," 22, male, Farmer, from Baden and destined for the United States.

John married Elizabeth Schappert about 1858 (location unknown); the marriage was blessed at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on August 22, 1860.

John and Elizabeth had six children:

NOTE: The obituaries for John Schwab are very confused when it comes to naming the surviving children. At the time of John's death these children were still alive:

Elizabeth "Libby" Schwab (Probst) - married to Valentine Probst and living in New York.

Margaret Schwab - unmarried and still living at home.

Mary Ann Schwab (Fetzer) - married to Joseph Fetzer and living in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

John Jacob Schwab - married to Agnes Teresa Donnelly and living in Ogden, Utah.

John Schwab, an old and respected resident of Newtown, died last night after several weeks' illness of heart disease. He was 71 years of age and resided in that section of the city for many years. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Margaret, Elsie, and Libby, all at home. The funeral will be announced later. [Age at death: 71] -----------------------------------

The funeral of John Schwab will be held from St. Nicholas Church this morning at 9:30 with Solemn High Mass.
