John Scudder of Elizabeth Town, Essex County, died testate with a will dated Jan. 13, 1738/39, which was proved Apr. 25, 1739. His legatees were his wife Mary and his children, John, Richard, Samuel, Thomas, Elizabeth, Kesiah, Anna, Mary, Joanna, and Phebe. He made a bequest of £10 to Presbyterian Church of Christ, in Society of Elizabeth Town, to be given on Thanksgiving Day.

His real estate in the will is described as adjoining the land of Joseph Moss in Rahway, as well as meadowland purchased of Joseph Thompson in Rahway. He nominated as his executors his sons, Samuel and John, and Ephraim Marsh. The witnesses were Joseph Woodruff, Gershom Moore, Nathaniel Hubbell. An inventory amounting to £410.09.10, including six negro slaves was taken by John Rolph and Joseph Shotwell on June 27, 1739. [New Jersey Wills, Liber C, page 278]

His wife Mary, who was born Nov. 2, 1665 at Elizabeth, New Jersey, was a daughter of George Pack, yeoman, of Elizabeth Town who died testate with a will dated July 31, 1704, which was proved July 4, 1705, by his first wife Anna.
