About Judge John Shelby

John Shelby

Memorial

Birth: 1751 Death: 1818

On October 7, 1780 the foundation that would forever change the world was established. Fewer than one thousand American Heroes, through skill, luck, and the leadership of cunning strategists, defeated Patrick Ferguson, a brilliant star of the British military might. Nine members of the Shelby family, including John Shelby, were among those Heroes.

Their participation in the Battle of King's Mountain was documented in the "The Patriots at Kings Mountain" by Bobby Gilmer Moss which, along with "King's Mountain And Its Heroes: History Of The Battle Of King's Mountain, October 7th, 1780, And The Events Which Led To It" by Lyman Copeland Draper, Anthony Allaire, and Isaac Shelby, has long been recognized as the definitive listing of the participants. From the Roster:

•Shelby, David

•Shelby, Evan Jr., Major

•Shelby, Isaac, Colonel

•Shelby, James, Captain

•Shelby, John

•Shelby, John, Captain

•Shelby, Moses (w)

•Shelby, Moses, Captain

•Shelby, Thomas

The Daughters of the American Revolution have also documented the participation of the Shelby family in the battle. Fourteen members of the Shelby family have been honored as "DAR Ancestors": the six Shelby family members who fought in the Battle of King's Mountain have been assigned the following DAR Ancestor Numbers:

•Shelby, David - Soldier #: A102411

•Shelby, Evan Jr., Major #: A102420

•Shelby, Isaac, Colonel #: A102449

•Shelby, John, Captain #: A102462

•Shelby, Moses Jr. (w) #: A102541

•Shelby, Moses, Captain #: A102477

His baptism, marriage and the baptism of five of his children are on record in the parish register of the Church of England in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales." They were the parents of seven children:

Please refer to Evan Shelby's Find A Grave Memorial# 65634181 for a wonderful synopsis regarding this family.

Evan and Catherine Shelby had two sons and seven grandsons who fought at the Battle of King's Mountain.(1) Their son, Evan, was a major at the time of the battle: later, he would be promoted to general. Three of his sons accompanied him to the battle: (1.1)Captain Moses Shelby, Find A Grave Memorial# 127797653, (1.2)Captain James Shelby, and (1.3)Colonel Isaac Shelby, who would become the first governor of Kentucky (Reference Find A Grave Memorial# 11823).

(2)Captain John Shelby (Find A Grave Memorial# 127827264) was accompanied to the battle by sons (2.1) John and (2.2) David, Find A Grave Memorial# 93577863.

By 1780, Evan and Catherine's son, Major Moses Shelby, DAR Ancestor Number A102480, had died (Find A Grave Memorial# 43362288). Two of his sons, (3.1) Thomas and (3.2)Moses Shelby, Jr. joined their uncles and cousins in the battle. Moses, Jr. was wounded in battle (Find A Grave Memorial# 7839258).

John Shelby (b1751) was the son of Captain John Shelby 1724 – 1794 and Sarah Davis. Circa 1794, he married Elizabeth Brigham 1778 – 1838 and they had several children, including:

Alfred Moore Shelby married Elvira Carr Reed

Louisa Looney Shelby married Jessie Atherton Brunson

Clark Molton Shelby married Helen Minerva Lyon

Elizabeth Brigham was the daughter of James Brigham, DAR Ancestor Number A014446, Find A Grave Memorial# 127864370, and Louisa Looney. Brigham was another Patriot who fought at the Battle of King's Mountain.

While the actual burial site for John Shelby remains unknown, may this memorial serve as an expression of the gratitude we have for him for braving the unknown to help build a new country: our America.
