Biography

George A Moriarty FASG. "Stevens of Newbury and Andovre, Mass." in NEHGR (1931) 85:396-401 provides the primary research on this family even today. Nothing has been discovered since the publication of this article except for the connection to the Ilsley family. It states that John Stevens of Caversham, Oxfordshire, England married 27 Feb 1597 in Caversham, Oxfordshire, England to Alice Atkins. There were two men of the name Stevens recorded in that town, John who died 11 Jan 1517/8 and William whose wife named Cecily died 20 Feb 1601. There is no indication that either was his father but perhaps one of these men was his father - it can't be proven or disproved. No evidence was found for the parents of Alice Atkins. Based on these data perhaps John Stevens was born about 1575 at Caversham, Oxfordshire, England. John was taxed in Caversham in subsidies of 1576-77, 1580-81, 1593-94, and 1598-99. He is presumably the John Stevens who was buried on 21 September 1627 at Caversham, Oxfordshire, England. John's wife Alice survived her husband and accompanied her sons, John and William and her daughter Barbara (Stevens) Ilsey and Barbara's husband William Isley, when they emigrated to New England on the ship Confidence in April 1638, and was perhaps identical with the Anne Stevens, widow, who was buried on 17 July 1650 at Newbury, Massachusetts, where her son William had settled.
