Biography

Unknown Origin
John Stone's origin is unknown. His place of birth, birth date, and parents are unknown.[1]
Anderson places his birth date at c. 1597, based on the c. 1622 birth date of his eldest known son (based on 23 November 1677 disposition in which he gave his age as "about fifty-five years").
Alleged, unsourced parents John Stone and Elinor Cooke have been removed.
Immigration
One of the passengers aboard the Elizabeth, master William Stagg, voyage of 1635, was:
Jo: Ston Age 40 9 Apr 1635 oath at Hawkhurst, Kent [2] The Winthrop Society reports this was the identical man as the Salem settler named John Stone.[2] Savage reported two different men, one the passenger aboard the Elizabeth, and the other settled at Salem [Savage 4:205]; Pope created separate entries for the Elizabeth passenger and the resident of Salem [Pope 436].[1] Robert Charles Anderson reports there is no record which connects the 1635 passenger with the Salem settler. Anderson admits it is possible (based solely on John Stone's name and age), but there were no passengers who could have been his wife, step-children, or children.[1]
1636, Salem
John Stone was living in Salem in 1636, and possibly earlier. He kept the ferry from Massey's Cove, where he lived, to Bass River (Beverly) in that year and until 1639. He died between 1667, when the last record of him is found, and 1677 when his son John and his wife are referred to as John Stone, Sr. and wife Abigail.[3]
Marriages
John Stone was married at least twice.
John Stone married twice.[3]
He married an unknown 1st wife at England.[1] They had two known sons and probably others.
He married probably in the early 1630's at England, as his 2nd, to the widow of William Haskell,[1] Ellen or Eleanor, "Eelener," "Ellin," Haskell, widow of William Haskell of Charlton Musgrove, Somerset (William Haskell died in England in 1630).[3]

- John Stone, Jr. b c. 1622 England; mar Abigail Dixey
- Nathaniel Stone b c. 1631; mar Remember Corning Also in the household were the Haskell step-children:[1] Roger, William, and Mark Haskell, and probably sister Joan.[3] These were included in the household of seven mentioned in the 1637 meadow grant.[1]
