Stringer Family Records[3]

John Stringer I was born in the spring of 1682. In October 1689, when he was 7 years old, his father bound him to Thomas Allen "until he cometh to one & twenty years of age...to learn him the trade of a cooper." Unfortunately, John showed little talent for this trade.

Eight months later, Allen signed him over to another cooper, John Archer. But this didn't work any better, and eventually Archer must have released John from the indenture.

On October 19, 1696, John (now 14 years old) bound himself voluntarily to "Charles Combs & Elizabeth, his wife, until he be the age of twenty-one years, to learn the trade of a weaver." This was successful, and John did become a weaver.

He died in 1718, leaving his looms to Michael Draper; various personal items he owned to his son John or his sister Elizabeth Wethersby, with whom John Jr. was to live until he became 16; and the rest of his estate to his son Daniel. His wife Margaret is not mentioned; she must have died before 1718.

The two sons Daniel and John left Elizabeth City in opposite directions, Daniel moving north to Middlesex County, Virginia, and John moving south, to Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
