John Suttle

Note: John is referenced as a Glover of Potterton for an occupation. John's will names a son or daughter as of that time not yet born. That child is believed to be Francis Settle (b. 1622-23). That Francis eventually moved to Virginia and was the ancestor of the Suttle/Settle family. There will most likely never be secure documentation of this event as the records of Barwick-in-Elmet are missing for the years 1602 - 1630. This information is based on the book by Col. Emmet Reese.

John requested in his will that he be buried in the Churchyard of Barwick. In the will, he mentioned his wife Margery. He willed his 'lands and tenements in Potterton' to Robert Settle - his 'sonne and heire'. He also named a daughter, Agnes and made provision for 'such sonne or daughter as my wife Margery is no conceived withall'. His personal property was equally divided 'amongst Margery, my wife, Agnes, my daughter, and my sonne or daughter not as yet born'. Witnesses were Willm Ball, Francis Settle, Richard Settle and Samuell Wallbanke. John Settle's Will- Probated 8 November 1623

5. JOHN HENRY3 SETTLE (HENRY2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1570 in Potterton, Barwick Elmet, Yorkshire, England, and died Abt. 1623 in Potterton, Barwick, Elmet, Yorkshire, England. He married MARGERY Abt. 1605 in Potterton, Barwick Elmet, York, England. She was born Bet. 1568 - 1596, and died Bet. 1625 - 1683.
