Excerpt from FAMILY HISTORY OF MORGAN COUNTY--1976
John Sydney Clinton Hopper (known as Sydney) was married to Ruth Jane Barnard and they were the parents of 11 children before she died suddenly. Sydney never remarried. In his middle age he was afflicted with rheumatism, which progressed to the point where he was almost completely crippled, walking only with the aid of crutches. Then for unknown reasons, his health greatly improved and he was able to walk with only a cane. Some years later, his eyesight failed, and against the wishes of his family, he chose to have eye surgery in Chicago. He did not survive the surgery and is believed to have died in a Chicago hospital. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Hopper Family Lot in the
cemetery at Gillespie, Illinois.
