Notes for John Solomon Teetzel:

Per Dan Roberts data 5/8/1995:

Publication Annals of the Forty No.8 LOYALIST AND PIONEER FAMILIES OF WEST LINCOLN 1783-1833 (continued) Compiled by R. Janet Powell, published by the Grimsby Historical Society, 1957 Page p.9: TEETZEL "John Solomon Teetzel was born in the city of Cobourg, Upper Saxony, Germany, 27 Feb. 1762. The record in his Bible, translated from the German by Francis Teetzel, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1868, gives 1780 as the year he came to America. He settled in New Jersey and was married to Rachel Van Till, 5 November, 1786. In 1800 John Solomon with his wife and family moved to Upper Canada and settled in Grimsby Township.

"As well as farming, John Solomon was engaged in his trade of chiseling and cutting stone. The beautifully carved and lettered sandstones which mark the graves in early burying grounds and churchyards in the district are part of his work. Many of them, standing the test of time and marked by the letter T, may be seen in St. Andrew's churchyard, Grimsby.

"John Solomon was also active in the life of the community. He served on the Grimsby township council as one of two "Assessors" in 1803, as Assessor in 1805, as Collector in 1807, as Town Warden in 1810, as Assessor in 1811, 1812 and 1813, as Collector in 1814-15 and lastly as Assessor in 1818. At about this time he sold his property in Grimsby and moved to Palermo, Halton Co., where he died in 1836.

"Rachel, his wife, died March 20, 1813 and was probably buried at the Upper Thirty near his farm in Grimsby township. On 17 October, 1813 he married 2nd: Mary, widow of James Campbell."

--

The article goes on to list children of both wives. States that the History of the Teetzel family was collected by Dr. Speers of Ancaster.

A different publication: Commemorative Biographical Record of the Co. of Kent, Ontario, published in 1904 by J. H. Beers & Co. of Toronto, contains a sketch of the families of John Teetzel, his father Jonathan J Teetzel, and his father John S Teetzel. The information therein does not agree entirely with the above, particularly as to dates and number of children. It states, however, that John S Teetzel was "a man of fine mind and liberal education, having a knowledge of the dead languages, and for years he was engaged in teaching in New Jersey. In 1802 he moved to Ontario and settled in the Co. of Niagara, where he became very prominent in Masonry and for years was the secretary of the lodge in that locality."
