JOHN THURSTON THORNTON. Lawyer. Bom in Cumberland County, 1825, son of William Thornton. Graduate of Hampden Sydney College, 1842. Graduate in law of University of Virginia. Practiced law in Farmvil.e. Member, Secession Convention, from Prince Edward. 1861, Captain, Company K, 3rd Virginia Cavalry, C, S. A. Later Lieutenant-Colonel, 3rd Virginia Cavalry. Married Martha Riddle, daughter of James and Mary Morton Ridd'e (daughter of Thomas A. Morton). Presbyterian. Killed in battle at Sharpsburg, September 22, i862. WILLIAM MYNN THORNTON. Bom. _ Cumberland, County, October 28, 1851, son of John T. and Martha Riddle Thornton. B. A., Hampden-Sydney College, 1868; LL.D., 1880. Professor of Greek, Davidson College. Professor of Applied Mathematics, University of Virginia; Chairman of Faculty, 188896; Dean of Engineering, 1904-25; taught at the University. 1875-1931. The Engineering Building has been named in his honor. Author of many historical and biographical sketches. Married, first, Eleanor Rosalie Harrison, daughter of Dr. Gessner and Eliza ^Carter Harrison; second, Mrs. Gertrude Massie. Died September 11, 1935.
