John Tidwell (1807 - 1887), son of William Tidwell (circa 1782 - 1813) and Sarah Rebecca Goben (1787 - circa 1842), was born 14 January 1807 in Shelby County, Kentucky; he died at the age of 80 on 24 January 1887 at Mount Pleasant, Sanpete County, Utah Territory, and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Plot: A_104_3_7. He married Jane Smith (1812 - 1893), daughter of James Smith (born circa 1780) and Mary Mae Henthorn (born 1784), on 18 December at Clark County, Indiana.

John Tidwell emigrated to Utah as the captain of his own company, arriving on 16 September 1862. He was a member of the 1st quorum of Seventies and President of Seventies at Provo. He located at Pleasant Grove when he arrived in Utah in 1852, and moved to Mount Pleasant in 1859. He built a fort for protection against the Indians.
