John Charles Turnbull was born at Russells Creek in Victoria, Australia, on 10 September 1886. He was the son of William Jeffrey Turnbull (1852-1919) and Violet McNeill Turnbull (nee Bowman) (1858-1934) who married in Victoria, Australia, in October 1876. John was a miner. He served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, during World War I (Service No. WWI 32973). He died of disease in Wiltshire, England, and was buried in the Tidworth Military Cemetery (C. 215).
