About John Ulrich Stucki
John Ulrich Stucki was born on 8 June 1837 to Johannes Stucki and Elizabeth Sauter in Oberneunforn, Thurgau, Switzerland. He embraced the gospel on 1 November 1856 after receiving a testimony from the Lord that it was His Gospel. On 9 August 1859, he emigrated to the United States from Switzerland. On 18 August 1859, while he was aboard the ship “Emerald Isle,” he married Margareth Huber. For a time, he lived in New York, then moved to Salt Lake City, Cache Valley, and eventually settled in Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho.
Before moving to Bear Lake County, he farmed in Cache Valley until about 1864. When he moved to Idaho, he acquired a tract of land, which he improved and brought to a high state of cultivation, and which he continued to operated the remainder of his life. While still a young man, he practiced law to some extent in addition to his farming activities.
John had many wives as did many men during his time. His wives were Margaretha Huber, Jane Butler, and Anna Clara Spori. From his wives, he had a total of twelve children.
A strong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John served in the Stake Presidency for six to seven years and also held the office of patriarch. He also presided over the Swiss and German missions for two and a half years, beginning in 1874, and again in 1888 for about the same period. John died on 18 June1918 at age 81.
