About John Vaille, of Great Dunmow

John Vail (1592 - 1650) and Alice Moore (1593 - 1628).

Marriage of 17 January 1619 for John Vaille, of Great Dunmow, County Essex, Husbandman, and Alice Moore, of Little Canfield - Marriage Licences in St. Catherine Cree Church, London, England. John Vail (1592-1650) father of Thomas Vail (1620-1687) who married Sarah Wentworth and had a cousin who is recorded to have had his last name written as Vill. On the List of Vicars at the Stokes Poges Church, the "Country Churchyard" in England, Robert Vill is listed there in 1675.

Decendant of Galfridus (Geffrey) LaVeyle, or Vele - 70th generation from Antenor I (King of Sicambria - 433 B.C.)

Galfridus's grandson was Sir Peter Veale, Knight (1331-1396) of Gloucester, England, and created the family crest.

John Veale with his wife Martha deBerkeley, lived in Gloucestershire, England, were the origin of the 3 American primates whose lineage spawned all American Vail's.

The John Veale who married Alice Moore, had sons named Jeremiah and Thomas. Both brothers named a son 'John' (their father's name). Jeremiah and Thomas emigrated to America.

Emigration dates for John's sons Jeremiah and Thomas are 'iffy'. Charles Armstron claimed Jeremiah emigrated on board the "James" in 1644, but his name first appeared on records dated July 24, 1639, when he was a witness in a court in Salem, MA. His brother Thomas was also in Salem in the 1640's. The records do not agree.

Thomas settled in Easthampton, and Jeremiah did also. They then moved to Southhold, Long Island. Catherine died about this time. In Southold, Jeremiah married Mary Folger Paine on May 24, 1660. They lived in a lot previously owned by Peter Paine, Mary's first husband. Three children were born to them: John in 1663, Daniel c. 1665, and Mary in 1667. Jeremiah died in 1687.

Jeremiah's daughter Catherine, who was also baptized (1646, in Salem), married Nathaniel, son of Thomas and Mary Youngs Moore.

On July 18, 1685 Jeremiah signed a deed with his third wife, Joyce, his son John and John's wife Grace.

In 1648 Jeremiah was a blacksmith. His wife Catherine was admitted to the First Church of Salem. Daughter Abigail was baptized in that Church in 1645, then Sarah in 1646/7, and son Jeremiah, Jr. in 1649.

Jeremiah's son John (1663) and his wife Grace had ten children.
