About Rev. John Noble Walker

HE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS FOUND IN FAMILY RECORDS, WRITTEN BY MAXINE WALKER BARKER IN 1980.

John Noble Walker---Medthodist minister, circuit rider, farmer, Civil War Soldier

he stood over six feet tall, was believe to be of Scottish Descent, and had flaming red hair.

John was born in Simpson County, Mississippi, on December 26, 1834. There he attended school, met and married Serena Catherine Shorter, also of Simpson County, and they had eleven children.

He served in the Civil War, enlisting at Westville, Mississippi, on April 30, 1862, in the 39th Mississippi Infantry, known as the Pearl River Guards, Company F. He was taken prisoner twice; once at Port Hudson, Louisiana, on July 9, 1863, was released, and finally surrendered with his company at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865.

He served as an itenerate Methodist minister, as a circuit rider, throughout Mississippi, and later in Texas, where he moved his family in 1878.

In 1913, when he was 78 years old, he applied for his Civil War Pension, at Lufkin, in Angelin County. The reason stated on the application for his applying for the pension was that he was "no longer able to work". He received this pension until his death, ten years later, at the age of 88.3.

Those who remember his describe him in his later years, as "a very dignified old gentleman" who always put on his black coat, no matter how hot the weather, to come to the table to eat.

During the last years of his life, he owned no home of his own, and he and Serena Catherine visited about with their children, staying sometimes in East Texas, near Lufkin, and sometimes visiting their sons, Steve or Albert George in West Texas.

It was while they were visiting Steve, near Sweetwater, Texas, that he died, in 1923.
