Jan Wardynski immigrated to America in 1853. In Poland he had been a shoemaker, but in Columbiana had a general store. His wife came to join him in 1854 with three children. With Jan's wife, also came Jan's brother, Thomas and his family. During the trip one of Jan's son's died and was buried at sea.
After they landed in New Orleans, they went to St. Louis. They lived there for 12 years. Later Jan's family went to Columbiana, Greene County, Illinois, while his brother stayed in St. Louis.
Jan was a Union sympathizer and was killed at Columbiana, during the war by bushwhackers.
