John Wauchope, Lord Edmonstone

Biographical Summary

"John Wauchope of Edmonstone - Younger son of Sir John Wauchope of Niddry, obtained a charter of the lands of Edmonstone in Mid Lothian, on the 9th June 1671. He was admitted an Ordinary Lord on the 21st November 1682, in room of Charles Maitland of Halton, then superseded. Having disobliged the king by a vote which he gave in a cause depending between the Marquis of Montrose and his tutors, he was displaced, together with Lord Harcarse, in February 1688, in the manner mentioned in the notes on that judge."

• His descendant John Wauchope of Edmonstone became 8th Baronet of Newton.

"Sir John Don-Wauchope, Baronet [S. 1667], of Edmonstone, co. Midlothian, formerly John Wauchope, cousin and h. male, being only s. and h. of John Wauchope, of Edmondstone aforesaid, Lieut.-Col. of the Edinburgh Militia, by Henrietta Warrender Cecilia, da. of Sir James Gardiner Baird, 4th Baronet [S. 1696], which John, who d. June 1837, aged about 70, was 2d but 1st surv. s. and h. of John Wauchope, of Edmondstone (who d. 1810, aged 68), the s. and h. of James Wauchope, formerly James Don, of the same, Advocate 1716, the only son that had issue of Patrick Don, of Altouneburn, by Anne, da. of (whose issue became heir of line to) John Wauchope, of Edmondstone aforesaid, a Lord of Session [S.] under the style of Lord Edmondstone), the said Patrick being 3d s. of Sir Alexander Don, the 1st Baronet [S. 1667]."
