John was raised Lutheran, but converted to the more strict Church of the Brethren. In North Dakota, John was ordained as an elder (lay preacher) in the Brethren Church. He taught Sunday School and preached to the Brethren community in his home until his premature death. He was also known to preach in Lutheran churches.
