Birth

"John the son of John West was born the 18 of March 1679" in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1] Marriages

It seems possible John West married three times, although no record has been found showing it was the same John West who married all three women. The purported wives and marriage dates are

Renew Carpenter, m. 4 December 1703 at Rehoboth[2] Children include Renew and Mehitable Hannah (Toogood) Dean, widow of John Toogood m. 16 May 1717[3][4] No known children Abigail (Wheeler) Martin m. 26 December 1728 at Swansea, Bristol, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[5] Children include Grizzell and Elizabeth

Family

Children of John West and Renew Carpenter:

Renew (West) Lippett (1706)[6] Mehitable West Children of John West and Abigail Wheeler: Grizzell (West) Tinkham (1729 - 1810) Elizabeth West (1732) Research Notes

No known records link the same John West to the three spouses listed above. The division of land in the probate record of Renew Carpenter's father Benjamin shows that she had passed away by 1727. The gravestone of Hannah (Dean) West who d. 1728 indicates that she was born around 1682. She would have been about 35 years old when she married John, making it a reasonable guess that it was her second marriage. It makes a tidy narrative to assume that both John and Hannah were widowed and found each other's circumstances a good fit that led to their marriage.

The timing of Hannah's death in August, 1728 followed by John's marriage to Abigail in December of the same year is again quite suggestive. And all three marriages involved a John West residing in Rehoboth.

But without a probate record for John, it is very hard to make a conclusive argument that the same man married all three women.

It is also reasonable to assume instead, for instance, John West had a son John with his first wife Renew, that John Sr. died without record and that the younger John married Abigail Wheeler in his 20s and was appointed guardian to his younger sister Mehitable. Indeed, guardianship papers were completed during the probate of Benjamin Carpenter, appointing John West the guardian of Benjamin's granddaughter Mehitable West.[7][8] it seems quite strange that John would be appointed guardian to his own daughter.
