John William Philp Henderson was born on 18 January 1919. He is the son of William Arthur Henderson and Elsie Maud Philp. He married Gwen Heiton, daughter of Robert John Heiton, on 29 August 1944.
He graduated from Emmanuel College, University of Queensland, Queensland, Australia, with a Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.) He graduated from Emmanuel College, University of Queensland, Queensland, Australia, in 1942 with a Bachelor of Surgery (B.S.) He served in the Second World War between 1943 and 1946. He gained the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the service of the Royal Australian Air Force. He was co-founder of the East Toowoomba Medical Clinic in 1953. He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (F.R.A.C.G.P.) He was invested as a Fellow, Royal College of General Practitioners (F.R.C.G.P.) in 1969. He held the position of Chief of the Name and Arms of Henderson on 25 June 1986. He lived in 2003 at Rosyth, 7 Owen Street, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia
