About John Williamson

WISCONSIN PVT CO H 11 REGT WIS CIVIL WAR

From Faye Keyes Shamrock (John's Great Granddaughter) notes: John immigrated form North Ireland in 1836 on the "Dublin" with his parents to Philadelphia, PA and then to the Mississippi River area. John and his brother James then settled in Williamson, IL and later Packwaukee, WI.

From FamilySearch.org:

John Williamson was born in Ireland about 1816-1819, came to Philadelphia 1838 with his parents and siblings, who all seem to have settled in Philadelphia. John went west to Wisconsin about 1848 or 49 and took a claim of land in Packwaukee, WI, farmed there till he died in 1890. Married 1850, thirteen children, about half died of diseases, he served in the Civil War and was lucky to return and have a good family life on the farm. Homestead with the old home is still in the family in Packwaukee, Wisconsin. 167 years! so far.

a longer biography is in the old county history album, published c. 1890...

A general family sketch... John Williamson's life story is in the local history for Marquette County, Wisconsin... It says they came over from Monaghan County, Ireland, in the 1830s (1838 in the passenger records on the Ship Lotus and a nice record of the ten family members is on the list). They came over via Liverpool, England to NY City, apparently intending to go to Pittsburg, PA, but maybe they needed work and found it in Philly, then stayed there, except for John who went west to Wisconsin just before 1850, where he got a homestead and married and they had about a dozen children, he served in the Civil War and returned to his home in Packwaukee, WI, where the farm is still in the family. I hope some day to go out there to see the home and homestead.

The rest of the family seems to have stayed in and around Philadelphia and is seen in the 1840 census and onward. I have built a lot of info on my main collections on Wiki Tree, as with all my other family lines. They married and died in Philly, many buried in the old Monument Cemetery and documented in those city and cemetery records, which are seen on Family Search and Ancestry. Monument Cemetery was closed in the 1950s so it could be moved outside the city to Rockledge, PA., but the records were well kept and are indexed on Ancestry in a big index of NJ and PA death records. I missed them under Philly, PA, but by searching on Ancestry with a name and date, I found the other big index had the secrets and saw the pages of the old records.

So I am adding many photos of people and records on my Wiki Tree pages as I find them along the way. Come and enjoy them. click here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fay-286
