212. Nancy Carol11 Winstead (Samuel10, John9, William8, Samuel7, Samuel6, Samuel5, Daniel4

Winstone, Jr, Daniel3, Richard2 Winston (Willson), John1 Winstone) was born January 04, 1821 in Near

Fulton, Tennessee, and died March 29, 1862 in Tennessee. She married Eli Craig Ownby August 10,

1839, son of Edward Ownby and Mary Cheek. He was born December 13, 1817 in Kentucky, and died

March 12, 1892 in Grayson Co Tx.

Notes for Nancy Carol Winstead:

Nancy died in Tennessee a few short months after giving birth to her 11th child. Her older sons were

gone to the Civil War and she was buried in an unmarked grave. She has been given a memorial on

her husbands stone at the Old Pilot Grove Cemetary in Pilot Grove, Grayson Co, TX.

More About Nancy Carol Winstead:

Burial: Unknown, Lewisburg, Marshall Co., TN, Memorial at Pilot Grove Cemetary, Grayson Co., TX

Notes for Eli Craig Ownby:

Eli was captured and taken prison by Yankee patrol in 1862. He was held for about 2 weeks and then

released. At the time he was widower with 6 children under 12 to take care of.

Family history and several census show Eli born in Kentucky............perhaps on the way to TN.

The 1880 Cannon Co, TN census show him born in Tennessee.

In the summer of 2000, during a heat wave of 110+ and one of the worst draughts in Texas history,

(and for you non Texans, THAT'S BAD). I decided to find my great-great-grandfather's grave. Eli

Craig Ownby was buried in 1892 at Pilot Grove Cemetery, which is only about 15 miles from my home.

My husband, Darrell, grew up even closer to the cemetery and "knew" all about it. One hot August

afternoon we took a ride over there and started walking the stones. We found Eli’s daughter Elizabeth

Nancy Taylor's, grave but couldn't find his. I had a picture of the grave stone which was about 5 foot

tall taken around 1980 when another researcher was visiting from Tennessee We walked the cemetery

twice and couldn't find it. Finally Darrell said, "Maybe it's really at Cannon" (about 3 miles down the

road). So we drove to Cannon Cemetery. Walked it twice and couldn't find it. I was

determined.......I knew it existed, just where. We went back to Pilot Grove, Darrell laughed and

pointed to a little used side road (one he had used for "Parking" back in the olden days) and said

25

"Maybe he's buried in the Black Cemetery". I said "no, he's buried here".....sooooooooooo....we walked

that sucker again. By now we were both sun burned and almost dehydrated and very smelly. Finally

on the verge of tears with frustration, I told him "Let's try the Black section". (Remember....this is 1892

Reconstruction Texas timing we are referring to). We went down the hill and there is this beautiful

cemetery with tall massive headstones. We start walking the rows and I found 3 Ownby's

immediately but no Eli. I even found (lying on the ground) Eli's wife Nancy Carol Winstead Ownby.

I kept saying over and over "he's got to be here". Remember it is 110 in the shade but I'm determined.

I was saddened by the fact that Nancy Carol was lying in the dirt and also confused, because she had

died in 1861 during the Civil War in TN. The family moved to TX in 1881. Why was she buried in

TX. Did they dig her up and move her bones or something? We kept walking and looking and

finally, out of desperation, (because he was hot and tired and thirsty) Darrell reached down and

flipped (that's an understatement) Nancy's stone over and guess what? There was Eli Craig lying face

down in the dirt. It bothered me for nearly a year and Darrell and our son, Stuart, planned to go over

there and fix the stone but weather wouldn't cooperate, so, in May of 2001, we went and dug a hole

and poured concrete for a pad. We let the concrete set up and went back 3 days later and set the stone

upright and glued the pieces with epoxy so that finally Eli and Nancy can get up out of the dirt and

stand proudly as they deserve to. I later found out that when Nancy died during the war (another

story another time) she was buried in an unmarked grave on the family farm so, when Eli died here in

Texas, his children had a stone erected with her memorial written on the opposing face of her husband,

who never remarried. We never solved the mystery of why Darrell had been told that this was the

"Black Cemetery", when actually it was just the "Old Pilot Grove Cemetery". Now that we have the

stone erect again you can read the inscriptions.

Nancy's inscription reads, "Dearest loved one we have laid thee in the peaceful graves embrace, But

thy memory will be cherished til we see thy Heavenly face".

Eli's inscription reads, "Tis hard to break the tender cord when Love has bound the heart, Tis hard, so

hard, to speak the words, Must we forever part".

waited a long time and by the time she knew what had happened she chose not to marry. She was a

happy, laughing person and was much loved by her siblings and their children. She was always "Aunt

Notes for Charles Batsell Winstead:

OBIT FROM NY TIMES; Aug 5, 1973, pg 53:

"CHARLES WINSTEAD, FBI AGENT WHO SHOT DILLINGER, DIES AT 82"

Albuquerque, NM - Aug 4: Charles Winstead, who is credited with firing two of the bullets that killed

John Dillinger outside the Biograph Theater, in Chicago, in 1934, died yesterday at the Albuquerque

Veterans Hospital; he was 82 years old.

Mr. Winstead, for many years considered one of the most accurate pistol shots in the Federal Bureau of

Investigation, also spent much of his early years in the agency chasing the gangster team of Bonnie

Parker and Clyde Barrow through Texas and Louisanna. But his meeting with Dillinger on the night of

July 22, 1934 was the most publicized event of his career.

He helped gun down the ganster when he emerged from the theater accompanied by two women, Anna

Sage and Polly Hamilton.

Mr. Winstead later recalled Dillinger was flanked by his two women companions when he emerged from

the theater about 9:30 PM.

It was Anna Sage, "the woman in red" who had tipped off the F.B.I. that Dillinger would be attending

the showing of "Manhatten Melodrama" at the Biograph.

Mr. Winstead recalled Dillinger attempted to run into an alley and reached for his gun. The agents fired

simultaneously. Dillinger began to "spin like a top and fell dead."

A laboratory analysis revealed that two of the bullets that hit Dillinger were fired by Mr. Winstead.

Mr. Winstead joined the F.B.I. after having served in World War I. He retired in 1943.

Survivors include his widow, Maude, two sons and a daughter.

Letter Written By J. Edgar Hoover to Charles Batsell Winstead on July 23, 1934:

Mr. C. B. Winstead,

Division of Investigation,

U. S. Department of Justice,

1900 Bankers Building,

Chicago, Illinois.

Dear Mr. Winstead:

I have been advised by Mr. Purvis and Mr. Cowley that it was you who shot and killed John Dillinger. I

Wanted to write and to express to you not only my official, but my personal congratulations and

commendation for your fearlessness and courageous action in this matter. We are all indeed proud of

you. It is particularly gratifying that Dillinger was shot and killed by one of our own men. I am informed

29

that the manner in which you handled yourself on this occasion was indicative if the usual calm,

deliberate and at the same time fearless manner which has reflected itself in your work since you entered

the Division.

I wanted you to know that I did personally, as well as officially, appreciate the effort and application

which you have given to this case from its inception, and in particular your courageous act of last

evening, in shooting and killing this notorious desperado.

Sincerely yours,

(signed) J. Edgar Hoover

The Cozy Corner was a children's column, originally published in The Semi-Weekly (Farm) News, at

Dallas and Galveston, Texas, beginning in late 1890. The first column to appear in The Dallas Morning

News was on March 31, 1895, with the final column appearing on January 25, 1903. The editor of the

column was "Mr. Big Hat," the nom de plume for Sara Isadore (Sutherland) Miner Callaway.

The earliest columns -- those that appeared in The Weekly (Farm) News, from late 1890, thru March

31, 1895 -- to my knowledge, no longer exist.

"Peggy" was Mr. Big Hat's fictitious goat, who had a tendency to "devour" an occasional letter

before they reached the printer; "Oklahoma" was Mr. Big Hat's pet cat. The "cousins" referred to in the

letters are, in most instances, fellow contributors to the column:

CHARLIE WINSTEAD, Sherman, Grayson Co., Tex. -- Little Mr. Big Hat: Since I wrote to you last, I

have had a birthday and a party. My grandma bought me two white rabbits last summer, and this

summer, I have six such pretty little ones. My grandpa has a park; it is called "Batsell's park," and he

has about twenty deer in it, besides seven little ones with spots on them. And, grandpa has a pair of

peafowls. They have two little ones that look just like little turkeys. One of them hopped into the slop. It

did it two times and grandpa had to get it out. The Sherman Register is going to give a bicycle to the

most popular little girl in the city, and I think and hope my little cousins, Annie Batsell, will get it. My

mother says grandpa has been taking The News ever since she could remember. I saw the cloud, the

evening of the cyclone, and have been over the track several times. Mr. Big Hat, my little brother says

tell you that he "tan took bikets and till boosters." He means "cook biscuits and kill mother's little

chickens." I could write you more, but will ask you one question and quit: Can I have your little sister,

Miss Big Bonnet, for my sweetheart?

He received a Civil War Veterans Pension. His grandson, Watt and grandaughter Polly remember that

when they were little, he would line all of the grandchildren up and give each of them a quarter every

month when he received his pension check. Watt II, says at one time he had $5 from the money that

Granpa Watt gave him. Considering this was just before the Depression, that was a lot of money.

Watt and his brother Sam were at Camp Chase at the same time. It is unknown if they knew each

other were there.
