John was one of the first settlers of Alamance County, North Carolina. He built Woody's Ferry, at which place, on the Haw River was the road already laid off and used from Hillsborough through the Stinking Quarter country to the Guilford County country, on to Salisbury-anotable raod, and historical ferry, over which there passed Tyron and Cornwallis, with their armies and many others.
John had 7 sons-John, Robert, James, Joshua, (one settled on the west side of the ferry, one was killed by lightning)...
John Woody died without a will. Under English Government, all property fell to this son James, who divided it equally among his younger brothers.
