Note: James S Wolverton and James S Wofter are the same person. It seems he was using James S Wolverton in the 1880, 1900, 1910 census then all of the sudden he began using the name James S Wofter. There are many sources where his children and wife are listed both as Wolverton and Wofter.
All the children began life with the Wolverton name but ended life with the Wofter name. Perhaps James had the family name changed legally for some reason but I found no legal document supporting this claim.
If anyone can shed more light on this paradox you are welcomed and invited to do so.
