"John Forrest and Elinor Gipson resided for some time at the fort, near where the late Billy Pillsbury resided for many years, and later removed to Northfield, to the farm now called the Leighton place. The oldest, John Forrest, Jr., was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, where he lost a leg, and to distinguish him from the others of the same name was called " Soldier John." He used to go from house to house and cobble shoes and gun pewter spoons. His daughter, Betsey, married Jonathan Cross, and a son, Forrest Cross, lived in Northfield, and had a large family of children."
