Find a Grave Notes: "Inscription: In Memory of Mr. Jonathan Townsend who died March 22, 1764 in ye 77th year of his age. "
Son of Martin and Abigail (Traine) Townsend of Watertown, MA. Jonathan's father died while he was still a minor and his sister, Abigail, wife of Nathaniel Pratt, was appointed his guardian in 1699.
As soon as he was legally of age, Jonathan sold the land he inherited from his father and was not heard from until about 1713 in Hebron, CT. He married and was the father of eight children. His first wife's name is not known but the early records of the First Congregational Church in Hebron were burned. She is not Mary Otis who married John Tompson. Nor is she Mary Sugars, the wife of a different man who lived at the same time, the Rev. Jonathan Townsend. Jonathan may have had a second marriage to Hannah Dean (per Mildred Clough). {The basis for these strong non-association statements is unknown (Sept 2020). See Find A Grave: Memorial #33048254 for Mary Sugars.})

We are unable to trace Jonathan Townsend of Watertown, Mass., after 1713 until he appears some years afterwards at Hebron, Connecticut. We have been unable to find the maiden name of his wife. We infer that he emigrated to Hebron, Connecticut, soon after 1713.
