Biography
Janet was born about 1420 daughter of Sir Richard Lovel of Ballumbie by his first marriage.[1]
Janet married to Sir Robert Graham of Fintry, a nephew of the Sir Robert whom Elizabeth Douglas, her step mother, witnessed assassinating King James I. Sir Robert Douglas says (II., p. 271) their lineal descendant, Robert Graham of Fintry, carries the three piles of Lovell in his arms in consequence of that alliance.
Sir Robert Graham and Janet Lovell had issue:
Mariot
David
Patrick
Margaret
Janet was witness on 1 May 1473 to an indenture between her husband, Robert Graham of Fintry and Thomas Fothringham of Powrie.[2]
At Edinburgh on 23 February 1475/6, Archibald, earl of Angus granted to her brother, Alexander Lovell of Ballumbie, the lands of Egglesmonichtie, Balmossie, the Brachen (Forthill?), two parts of the Kirkton of Monifieth and Justinleys. At the time this was granted, Alexander and Janet already held two 5-merk lands there. [3]
With her husband, she had a charter at Dundee on 2 June 1477. [4]
It appears that Janet died about 1478 for by 1480 Robert Graham of Fintry had a son by his new spouse Matilda Scrymgeour.
