Notes for MIGUEL SAENZ-GARCIA: Mil Familias III, by Rodolfo Gonzalez de la Garza. Page 74.

  • He and his family are listed on the 1753 and 1757 census for Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
  • From the Villa de San Augustin de Laredo Society: The census of March 1, 1753, does list the family: The town of Mier, also known as Paso del Cantaro (and Estacion de Mier, from the former governor of Nuevo Leon who prefered to stop there through 1714) was founded by authority of Jose de Escandon on March 6, 1753. As my source, I have used Guillermo Garmendia Leal's book Fundadores de Tamaulipas 1748-1770 in which he documents several censuses from this period for various settlements in Tamaulipas. I have gone one step beyond in that I have compiled the list of names into families.
    • Family 18: Miguel Saenz and Maria de Hinojosa, former residents of Monterrey, N.L., with children Gregorio (Age: 11), and Ignacia (Age: 9)
  • From the Hispanic Genealogy Society of Houston, TX: Jose Florencio Chapa was the new Capitan of Mier and most of the new residents were able to provide their own funds in settlement. The new settlers had come from Cerralvo and there was already a cattle and horse ranch in the region owned by José Félix de Almondoz. It had passed on to Prudencio Vasterra on Almondoz’s death. There were other residents who had already set up settlement in the area also. There had also been tribes of Indians, Garzas and Malagüecos that were in the area also. José Tienda de Cuervo had made a census of Ciudad Mier in July 15 1757 and the following families had been counted:
    • "Don Miguel Sáenz, married to Doña María de Hinojosa, has two children, arms, and twelve horses." (Jose Gregorio would be 15 at this time, while Ignacia would be 13)
  • In 1767, the king of Spain granted him "Porcion 73" land grant. This grant was 6,049 acres in what is now, Starr County, Texas (Los Saenz, boundary stone between Porcion 72 - owned by Juan Angel Saenz - and 73 is located in the Roma city cemetery). ROMA-LOS SAENZ, TEXAS. Roma-Los Saenz is a port of entry on U.S. Highway 83 and the Rio Grande, directly across from Ciudad Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, Mexico, in southwestern Starr County. Roma and Los Saenz are actually two adjoining settlements that have incorporated jointly; Spanish is the primary language. Corrales de Saenz was founded in the mid-1760s by local ranchers Miguel, Gerónimo, and Juan Ángel Saenz, followers of José de Escandón from the Spanish colonial city of Mier, and it is possible that what came to be known as Roma-Los Saenz and Ciudad Miguel Alemán were originally part of the same city, San Pedro de Roma, Tamaulipas. The area was known as Buena Vista and then Garcia Ranch. In 1848, when it became a part of the United States, the name was changed to Roma, suggested by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, who founded a mission there in the mid-1850s. The settlement had the only post office in Starr County in 1848.
