Note from Curator: following Charles Cawley in the Medieval Lands Database Project, we have posited Josceline's mother as Avelina de Crepon, sister of Gunnora, who married Osbern de Bolbec. Over the years, there has been much debate as to exactly which sister of Gunnora was her mother.

Robert de Torigny says that Roger de Montgomery had great possessions in various districts of Normandy from his mother, which would suggest that his mother was an heir. According to de Torigny, Josceline was the daughter of Wevia of Crepon, sister of Gunnora, Duchess of Normandy. In a later chapter he simply says that a niece of Gunnora (unnamed) was the mother of Roger de Montgomery.

However, Waters cites a document that shows that Josceline was not the daughter of Wevia, but of her sister Senfrie. Ives, Bishop of Chartres, forbade Henry I of England to give his daughter in marriage of Hugh de Neufchâtel on the grounds of consanguinity: "Gonnora et Senfria sorores fuerunt. . . . ex Senfia exivit Joscelina, ex Joscelina, Rogerius de Monte Gummeri, ex Rogerio, Mabilia soror Roberti Bellimensis." JOSCELINE de Bolbec . Josceline and her marriage are shown in Europäische Stammtafeln[697]. This is presumably based on Robert de Torigny, continuation of William of Jumièges[698], the unreliability of this part of whose chronicle is discussed in the Complete Peerage[699]. Guillaume of Jumièges records that “nepotes...plures...Gunnor...earum...quintam” married “Hugo de Monte-gummerici” by whom she had “Rogerius pater Roberti de Bellismo”[700].
