Surname: CARREIRO, in Azores. Immigration records and ship manifest for Jose Carreiro and his family show CARREIRO. Although the LUIZ surname shows up within original Portuguese Records, one must first search for 'Carreiro.' The LUIZ surname became more prominent after settling in Hawaii. Also, it seems to be consistent that, in Portugal, if the infant being baptized was male, the last name ended in 'o', or if female, the last name ended in 'a'.

1863 Portuguese Baptismo of the legitimate son, JOSE. TRANSLATION: On the first day of the month of October, 1863, in this parish of Senhora da Oliveira in Faja de Cima, of the District of Ponta Delgada, Island of Sao Miguel, the Ecclesiastical District of the City and of the Diocese of Angra, I, the presbytero (priest) Jose Miguel Borges da Costa, solemnly baptize this induvidual with the name of JOSE. He was born in this parish of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in Faja de in the third hour of the morning of the second day of September, 1883, legitimate son of Manoel Carreiro, a countryman, and Antonia de Jesus, housewife. They are residents of this same parish: Rua Directa da Oliveira in the place of Faja de Cima, Paternal grandfather LUIZ CARREIRO and paternal grandmother MARIA DE ESTRELLA. (Note: They must come from the same place as there is no mention as to where they came from. That is standard in most records).

Maternal grandparents: Jose d'Almeida and Ursulina (?) de Jesus. Godparents (padrinhos): JOSE RODRIGUES CORQUILHO (Note: difficult to make out exact spelling of surname) and ANTONIA DE JESUS. Godparents, both single and residents of the Rua Directa da Oliveira, Faja de Cima, Ponta Delgado, Sao Miguel. (Note: that is the same address listed above.). E para constar: and in proof of this, I made this entry in duplicate in the presence of the godparents and the godfather who signed with me, did not know how to write. (Can't translate the next but I'm sure it must be the sign that the godfather made.)

Historical Note: After the revolution, around 1843, the churches were required to make a duplicate of every record and send it to the government. This became the civil record. Church records in Faja de Cima begin in 1837. Parish of Nossa de Oliveira later become known as Santa Luzia Parish. LDS Film Research: Instead of by the year, records are in books. TRANSLATION: On day two of the month of August (in the) year of 1885, in this Parish of Senhora da Oliveira, Faja de Cima, District of the City of Ponta Delgada, diocese of Angra, in my presence attended the betrothed JOSE CARREIRO and MARIA DA GLORIA, known to me, with all the correct papers for marraige. (He is) twenty one years, unmarried companion (living) on house on Rua Direita, his natural home, who received baptism at the same place (Parish of Senhora da Oliveira), legitimate son of MANUEL LUIZ, of the same natural place (family home on Rua Direita) and member of this same church. She (Maria Gloria) was 16 years old, single, employed as a domestic servant at the parish and lived at Rua Direita and a member of Our Lady de Oliviera, located in Faja de Cima. (She is) natural and baptised customer of Matrix Sao Sebastian, City of Ponta Delgada, parents are not known, nothing shows in public records (can't translate the numbers of identification of public record). The intended spouses, named in this document, were united in matrimony in the rite of Holy Mother Roman Catholic Apostolic Church. The witnesses present, who are both known, Alfredo da Camara, companion and countryman, and Antonia d' Almeida, innkeeper. (This person must be his mother, Antonia de Jesus) both are married and living at the same address in the City of Ponta Delgada of this country and diocese. This record was drawn in duplicate, was read and checked before the spouses and signed by the witnesses. (Name of priest) Father Jose Francisco de Medeiros (can't read his title).

Voyage notes; 65 days from Oporto, Portugal and Ponta Delgada, 392 male passengers, 180 female, 160 children. 732 Total passengers. Family history: When ship arrived Onemea Arch, Island of Hawaii, Manuel was so excited to reach land that he dived off and swam to shore. Since his birth date is 18 Sep 1885, he would have been 9 years old when this family arrived. This is consistent with family folk lore.

Aguai and Jose were married about 1909. I have not found documentation of their marriage.)
